A Mariana Alcoforado apaixonou-se pelo Conde Chamilly, oficial de cavalaria francesa, e é creditada com Cinco Cartas de amor publicadas pela 1.ª vez em 1669 (Paris). A Maria Alcoforado entrou no Convento com apenas 11 anos e morreu com 83 anos.

Lenda de Beja:
Conta a lenda que quando a cidade de Beja era uma pequena localidade de cabanas rodeada de um compacto matagal, uma serpente assassina era o maior problema da população. A solução para este dilema passou por assassinar a serpente, feito alcançado deixando um touro envenenado na floresta onde habitava a serpente. É devido a esta lenda que existe um touro representado no brasão da cidade.

It is due to this legend that there is a bull represented on the coat of arms of the city.
