Esta pitoresca vila do Alentejo, feita de ruas estreitas e casas caiadas, guarda a memória da antiga e poderosa Ordem Militar de Avis. Após ter sido conquistada aos Mouros em 1211, D. Afonso II doou a terra a Fernando Anes, Mestre dos Freires de Évora, futura Ordem de Avis, com o propósito de povoar e erguer o castelo, o que foi feito entre 1214 e 1223. Ao fazer o circuito da vila encontrará três das suas seis torres originais: da Rainha, de Santo António e de S. Roque, bem como alguns panos de muralha medieval que se fundem com as casas da vila. No alto do morro de granito, rodeado pelas águas de uma ribeira, nascia assim Avis sob a sombra protectora do Convento da Ordem que lhe deu o nome.
Entre no Largo do Convento pela Porta da Vila, junto à Torre da Rainha, que enquadra uma bonita panorâmica da planície que se estende a perder de vista.
Neste centro histórico visite a igreja e a parte das dependências do antigo convento da Ordem Militar de S. Bento de Avis que se encontra restaurada. O edifício ao lado, hoje ocupado pelos Paços do Concelho, fez parte outrora da residência dos Mestres da Ordem. Caminhando para a esquerda encontrará em frente das escadas do jardim Municipal, o original pelourinho, decorado com máscaras e carrancas. Coroa o conjunto uma águia com as asas estendidas, símbolo da vila. Nesta área merece também visita a igreja matriz (séc. XV), forrada no interior com azulejos polícromos do séc. XVII.
Deixe-se levar pelo encanto das ruas estreitas de sabor medieval e pela brancura das paredes das pequenas casas de arquitectura alentejana e descanse no pequeno mas encantador Jardim do Mestre de Avis, passeando os olhos sobre a vila a seus pés e a imensa planície.
Nos arredores, não deixe de visitar a barragem do Maranhão, obra dos anos 50 destinada a rega, onde pode praticar vários desportos. O miradouro permite desfrutar de uma magnífica vista sobre as águas deste lago artificial e sobre as pastagens e searas envolventes.

This picturesque village in Alentejo, made up of narrow streets and whitewashed houses, keeps the memory of the ancient and powerful Military Order of Avis. After being conquered from the Moors in 1211, D. Afonso II donated the land to Fernando Anes, Master of the Friars of Évora, future Order of Avis, with the purpose of populating and building the castle, which was done between 1214 and 1223. As you tour the town, you will find three of its six original towers: the Queen, Santo António and S. Roque, as well as some sections of the medieval wall that merge with the town's houses. At the top of the granite hill, surrounded by the waters of a stream, Avis was born under the protective shadow of the Convent of the Order that gave it its name.
Enter Largo do Convento through Porta da Vila, next to Torre da Rainha, which provides a beautiful view of the plain that stretches as far as the eye can see.
In this historic center, visit the church and part of the former convent of the Military Order of S. Bento de Avis, which has been restored. The building next door, now occupied by the Town Hall, was once part of the residence of the Masters of the Order. Walking to the left you will find, in front of the stairs of the Municipal garden, the original pillory, decorated with masks and frowns. The whole is crowned by an eagle with outstretched wings, the symbol of the village. In this area, the main church (15th century) is also worth a visit, lined inside with polychrome tiles from the 15th century. XVII.
Let yourself be carried away by the charm of the medieval-flavoured narrow streets and the white walls of the small houses of Alentejo architecture and rest in the small but charming Jardim do Mestre de Avis, gazing out over the village at your feet and the immense plain.
In the surroundings, be sure to visit the Maranhão dam, built in the 1950s for irrigation, where you can practice various sports. The viewpoint allows you to enjoy a magnificent view over the waters of this artificial lake and over the surrounding pastures and cornfields.
