O tômbolo da península de Peniche formou-se lentamente durante o século XVII. Essa língua de areia, na costa oriental da ilha, era invadida pelo mar durante a maré cheia e ficava a descoberto durante a maré vazia.

Peniche é uma cidade portuguesa no distrito de Leiria, situada na província da Estremadura e integrando a Comunidade Intermunicipal do Oeste na região do Centro, com 13.212 habitantes. É sede do pequeno município de Peniche que tem 77,55 km² de área e 26 431 habitantes e está subdividido em 4 freguesias'.
