É sede do pequeno município de Alpiarça com 95,36 km² de área e 6 976 habitantes (2021),o que corresponde a uma densidade demográfica de 73,15 hab/km², sendo um dos seis municípios de Portugal que possuem apenas uma freguesia, correspondente à totalidade do território do concelho. O município é limitado a nordeste e leste pelo município da Chamusca, a sueste e sudoeste por Almeirim e a noroeste por Santarém.
O nome da localidade adveio da ribeira homónima, que se encontra nas cercanias.
Quanto às origens do nome dessa ribeira, de acordo com o linguista português José Pedro Machado, tal fica-se a dever à custosa navegabilidade desse curso de água, causada pela grande profusão de moliços e algas que nela medravam. Assim. o nome «Alpiarça» será derivado da palavra «peaça», que por sua vez é uma corruptela da palavra «peia», que significa 'entrave, embaraço ou estorvo'.
Ao étimo «peaça» foi, ainda, adicionado o prefixo árabe al-, durante a ocupação mourisca.
História
Até 1836, fez parte do concelho de Santarém, tendo então sido integrada no município de Almeirim. Em 17 de Fevereiro de 1906, foi elevada à condição de vila, tendo-se tornado sede de concelho autónoma, composta por uma única freguesia, em 2 de Abril de 1914, pela lei n.º 129.
Entre 1919 e 1926, no entanto, o concelho chegou a integrar a vizinha freguesia de Vale de Cavalos (que abrangia as atuais freguesias de Vale de Cavalos e Parreira), atualmente no município da Chamusca

It is the seat of the small municipality of Alpiarça with 95.36 km² of area and 6 976 inhabitants (2021), which corresponds to a demographic density of 73.15 inhabitants / km ², being one of the six municipalities of Portugal that have only one parish, corresponding to the entire territory of the municipality. The municipality is bordered to the northeast and east by the municipality of Chamusca, to the southeast and southwest by Almeirim and to the northwest by Santarém.
The name of the locality came from the homonymous river, which is in the vicinity.
As for the origins of the name of this stream, according to the linguist Portuguese José Pedro Machado, this is due to the costly navigability of this watercourse, caused by the great profusion of moliços and algae that medraram in it. Like this. the name 'Alpiarça' will be derived from the word 'peaça', which in turn is a corruption of the word 'peia', which means 'hindrance, embarrassment or hindrance'.
To the etymology 'peaça' was also added the Arabic prefix al-, during the Moorish occupation.
History
Until 1836, it was part of the municipality of Santarém, having then been integrated into the municipality of Almeirim. On February 17, 1906, it was elevated to the status of a village, having become the seat of an autonomous municipality, composed of a single parish, on April 2, 1914, by law No. 129.
Between 1919 and 1926, however, the municipality came to integrate the neighboring parish of Vale de Cavalos (which covered the current parishes of Vale de Cavalos and Parreira), currently in the municipality of Chamusca
