A atividade económica principal desta freguesia é a agricultura, produzindo-se aqui vinho, azeitona, laranja, mel e cereais de qualidade.
Poiares orgulha-se da sua Igreja Matriz, datando de 1962, bem como dos seus legados arqueológicos de grande importância, como a Pintura Rupestre 'A Lontra' da Fraga do Gato, a Calçada de Alpajares e o Castro de S. Paulo, onde junto das ruínas de uma capela erigida a este Santo se encontram vestígios numa rocha de xisto, de que se julga serem sepulturas.
