No extremo oriental de Ferreira do Alentejo, a freguesia de Alfundão delimita este concelho dos de Cuba e Beja.
É uma das mais antigas povoações do Alentejo. Parece ter sido muito importante, inclusivamente, durante o período romano. Duas inscrições dedicadas à deusa Fortuna são os vestígios mais esclarecidos desse tempo da história de Alfundão. O próprio topónimo, ao contrário do que se poderia pensar, não é de origem arábica mas sim latina. Está relacionado com o nome próprio Fundana - importante família da época - ao que os árabes acrescentaram a alf1palavra al.
Mesmo sem grandes confirmações documentais, o certo é que, por volta do século XIII, Alfundão seria já um senhorio com jurisdição própria. Em 1372, D. Fernando doou o seu termo a Diogo Afonso de Carvalhal, período a partir do qual passou a ter, mesmo de forma efémera, a categoria de vila.

Historical Review:
In the extreme east of Ferreira do Alentejo, the parish of Alfundão delimits this county of Cuba and Beja.
It is one of the oldest villages in the Alentejo. It seems to have been very important, even during the Roman period. Two inscriptions dedicated to the goddess Fortuna are the most enlightened traces of this time in the history of Alfundão. The toponym itself, contrary to what one might think, is not of Arabic origin but Latin. It is related to the given name Fundana - an important family of the time - to which the Arabs added the alf1word al.
Even without great documentary confirmations, the truth is that, by the thirteenth century, Alfundão would already be a landlord with its own jurisdiction. In 1372, D. Fernando donated his term to Diogo Afonso de Carvalhal, a period from which it began to have, even ephemerally, the category of village.
