Desde o início do povoamento da ilha Terceira que a Praia desempenhou um papel de destaque na história local. Aqui se estabeleceu a sede da primeira capitania da Terceira (1456 a 1470) comandada por Jácome de Bruges primeiro capitão donatário da ilha. A Praia foi proclamada Vila em 1480, ainda no tempo de Álvaro Martins Homem.

No final do século XV e ao longo do século XVI, a Praia, como então se chamava, contribuiu de forma decisiva para a riqueza económica e prosperidade da ilha. Aquando do desembarque do pretendente ao trono D. António Prior do Crato, este foi aclamado rei nesta localidade em 1582.

No final do domínio filipino, foi confiada a Francisco Ornelas da Câmara, a missão de aclamação real e restauração da soberania portuguesa no arquipélago. No dia 24 de Março de 1641, em pleno adro da Matriz de Santa Cruz, Francisco Ornelas da Câmara aclamou D. João IV como rei de Portugal, jurando-lhe obediência, tendo o povo dado vivas e aclamado o novo rei.

Aquando da Guerra Civil Portuguesa e das lutas entre liberais e absolutistas (1828-1834) a Praia, que tomou o partido dos liberais, foi alvo de uma batalha a 11 de Agosto de 1829. A armada miguelista composta por 21 navios e com forças superiores às existentes em terra, enfrentaram os locais que resistiram heroicamente e derrotaram a poderosa armada. Esta vitória leva a que, a 12 de Janeiro de 1837, D. Maria II lhe outorgasse o título 'da Vitória'

A sua importância económica foi crescente, apesar do terramoto 15 de Junho de 1841, acontecimento que ficou conhecido como a Caída da Praia, que a destruiu quase por completo. Graças ao empenho de Silvestre Ribeiro, a cidade foi reconstruída, melhorando as condições habitacionais da sua população. Desde então se foi registando um desenvolvimento progressivo da cidade, que viria a atingir proporções mais significativas com a chegada dos Ingleses e Norte Americanos na década de 40, por altura da II Guerra Mundial.

Since the beginning of the settlement of the island of Terceira, Praia has played a prominent role in the local history. Here was established the headquarters of the first captaincy of Terceira (1456 to 1470), commanded by Jácome de Bruges, the first grantee captain of the island. Since then, there has been a progressive development of the city, which would reach more significant proportions with the arrival of the British and North Americans in the 40s, at the time of World War II.
