Situada no concelho de Cuba, a 7 km de Alvito, a 11km da Cuba e a cerca de 30 km de Beja.
Vila Ruiva, cerro de casas caiadas afeiçoadas à encosta íngreme, que se empraiam no sopé ao longo da estrada que segue para Albergaria dos Fusos até Viana do Alentejo, passando por Água de Peixes. Este caminho é hoje secundário, mas em tempos foi o principal, como atesta a Ponte Romana que permite transpor o leito da Ribeira de Odivelas, que servia a Rota entre Beja e Évora. A Povoação cresceu junto da estrada, como se fosse qualquer povoação ribeirinha, e a via fosse um rio que ligasse terras e gentes distantes.
Vila Ruiva foi Vila e sede de Concelho até ao início do Século XIX. Pertenceu ao Real Mosteiro da Conceição de Beja. Apresenta uma bela Igreja Matriz, de invocação de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação. Ostenta uma Ponte Romana sobre a Ribeira de Odivelas, também denominada por "Ponte de Vila Ruiva" e uma Barragem, também Romana, conhecida como Barragem de Nossa Senhora da Represa.

O largo do Povoado abre-se à velha artéria romana que continuou a servir, convidando à paragem dos visitantes. Um aprazível Jardim de Laranjeiras, à boa maneira mediterrânica, antecede o Edifício da Junta de Freguesia, outrora dos Paços do Concelho, quando foi sede concelhia, até ao ano de 1836. A memória desse estatuto passado ainda é bem visível no campanário, onde o sino badalava ao ritmo da vida municipal, símbolo do poder concelho que, em tempos, se ergueu, destacado, no centro da Praça.
