A pequena 'Aldeia do Chão das Ovelhas' fica localizada nas proximidades da Sertã e muito próxima da Barragem do Cabril, na Beira Baixa. A aldeia cujo o nome vem de ser uma aldeia bastante antiga, com grande importância agrícola ligada a zonas florestais, onde a pastorícia era bastante determinante. Pelo facto de se localizar num cimo de um planalto em forma de lomba (daí ser também designado por cimo da lomba), desenhada e trabalhada há centenas de anos pelo Homem que criaram zonas agrícolas de excelência com muita água na sua envolvência, o que lhe confere uma aspeto de um aldeia medieval castelar.
Esta aldeia é constituída por 7 edifícios, com 7 artigos urbanos, com 800 m2 de construção e 5 terrenos com 5 artigos rústicos, que totalizam um área total de 12 500 m2. As casas existentes praticamente em ruínas, poderão ser totalmente recuperadas e reabilitadas, dando assim lugar, a um possível Complexo Turístico em Casas de Xisto, podendo ainda ser ampliado. A aldeia possui todas as infraestruturas públicas (abastecimento de água, energia, telecomunicações, vias de comunicação, iluminação pública). Importa referenciar os excelentes acessos: com 75 metros de via pavimentada e a cerca de 500 metros temos a estrada nacional; a 6 km IC8; a 21 KM de Autoestrada A13. A acessibilidade desta aldeia face a outras existentes é verdadeiramente extraordinária.
Há cerca de 60 anos foi abandonada pelo último morador, justificando a sua mudança, por uma outra casa na proximidade, pelo fato de se sentir muito só, rodeado de casas abandonadas. Esta Aldeia antes de ser separada na herança, pertenceu a 3 gerações de Jerónimos, Avó, Pai e Neto, mas a sua história é muito mais antiga. Alguns dos descentes, acabaram por se mudar para lugares mais povoados nas redondezas e outros, acabaram por ir viver para os grandes centros urbanos.
As hortas em volta desta aldeia, são de excelência e têm muita água, segundo uma senhora velhinha que lá trabalhou, há mais de 70 anos, houve uma grande período de seca e os poços ficaram quase sem água e nos poços nos terrenos anexos há aldeia, eram os que mais água tinham, e nessa altura, as pessoas plantaram as couves e outros produtos agrícolas, apenas com uma rega aquando da plantação e os produtos agrícolas, semeados e plantados, acabaram por crescer, devido à frescura destas terras agrícolas, dando alimento às pessoas da aldeia e das aldeias vizinhas.
A aldeia situa-se num dos paraísos de Portugal com mais sol e água a sul da serra da Lousã e a poente da serra da Madeirã, quase banhada pela Rio Zêzere, junto a duas barragens (Cabril e Bouçã). As suas ribeiras e o rio que nele desaguam, nas últimas 3 décadas têm atraído cidadãos oriundos de vários países da Europa central e do norte (presentemente, já representam dos residentes deste território), pela sua paisagem, pelo meio ambiente e pelo ar (zona também muito conhecida por ser uma instância de turismo de saúde e bem estar, ao longo dos últimos séculos, conseguindo passar ao lado das pandemias ao longo de séculos. Um famoso escritor nacional, Miguel Leitão de Andrada, conterrâneo deste território, do séc. XVI, escreveu sobre esta aldeia, que se tratava de uma terra pura, onde nunca tinha até então entrado a fatídica 'peste negra'.
'É de boa saúde tanto ... . que nunca aqui se viu o problema da peste, em tanto que nestes nossos tempos; a saber, no ano de 1569 a peste grande, e outras no ano de 1580, sendo este reino tão afetado deste mal.
Vive aqui a gente muitos anos e muitas pessoas sãs, sem médicos, e eu tenho um instrumento de nobreza e limpeza, em publico, que me foi necessário para tomar o habito de Cristo, de seis testemunhas, tirado nesta vila; e todas passam de cem anos, e algumas de cento e vinte, e cento e quinze; e um Pero Carvalho, testemunha, dizia há sua neta:
- Quando nos perguntam o que mais gostamos nesta aldeia, respondemos que é facto de ver um dos mais extraordinários pôr do sol, que vi na minha vida, olhar para trás e pensar que estou na minha aldeia medieval, que se destaca num planalto rodeado de montes e vales, que elevada no horizonte, parece um pequeno castelo onde se reina, se vive e se sonha'. The village, whose name comes from being a very old village, with great agricultural importance linked to forested areas, where pastoralism was quite determinant. The accessibility of this village compared to others is truly extraordinary.
About 60 years ago, it was abandoned by the last resident, justifying his move to another house nearby, because he felt very lonely, surrounded by abandoned houses. This village, before being separated in inheritance, belonged to 3 generations of Jerónimos, Grandmother, Father, and Grandson, but its history is much older. Some of the descendants ended up moving to more populated places nearby, and others ended up moving to large urban centers.
The vegetable gardens around this village are excellent and have plenty of water. According to an elderly lady who worked there over 70 years ago, there was a long period of drought and the wells almost ran dry, but the wells in the adjacent lands to the village had the most water, and at that time, people planted cabbages and other agricultural products, with just one watering at planting time, and the agricultural products, sown and planted, ended up growing due to the freshness of these agricultural lands, providing food for the people of the village and neighboring villages.
The village is located in one of Portugal's paradises with more sun and water south of the Serra da Lousã and west of the Serra da Madeirã, almost bathed by the Zêzere River, near two dams (Cabril and Bouçã). Its streams and the river that flows into it have attracted citizens from various countries in Central and Northern Europe over the past 3 decades (currently representing 1/3 of the residents of this territory), due to its landscape, the environment, and the air (also known as a health and wellness tourism destination over the last centuries, managing to bypass pandemics for centuries. A famous national writer, Miguel Leitão de Andrada, a native of this territory from the 16th century, wrote about this village, stating that it was a pure land, where the dreaded 'Black Plague' had never entered until then.
'It is in good health...that the problem of the plague has never been seen here, as in our times; namely, in the year 1569 the great plague, and others in the year 1580, being this kingdom so affected by this evil.
People live here for many years and many healthy people, without doctors, and I have a document of nobility and cleanliness, in public, which I needed to take the habit of Christ, from six witnesses, taken in this village; and all pass one hundred years old, and some one hundred and twenty, and one hundred and fifteen; and one Pero Carvalho, a witness, used to say to his granddaughter:
- When they ask us what we like most about this village, we answer that it is the fact of seeing one of the most extraordinary sunsets I have ever seen in my life, looking back and thinking that I am in my medieval village, which stands out on a plateau surrounded by hills and valleys, which elevated on the horizon, looks like a small castle where one reigns, lives, and dreams.'
