Uma visita a Beja num ambiente de calma alentejana, à descoberta de conquistas e de amores escondidos.

Em Beja é chegar e rumar à Torre de Menagem do Castelo, com lugar na história do país, onde se deram grandes batalhas para defender as fronteiras de Portugal. Com 40 metros de altura e toda construída em mármore, é o monumento-bandeira de Beja. A vista do topo é inédita, uma forma expansiva de admirar a cidade e a paisagem alentejana em redor.

Nas redondezas, a Igreja de Santiago, a Sé e a Igreja de Santo Amaro onde está instalado o Núcleo visigótico do Museu Regional. Seguindo pela Rua D. Manuel I, e depois de passar em frente a uma Escola Profissional a funcionar onde era um antigo hospital, encontra-se o coração da cidade, a Praça da República.

Em volta, a arquitetura de estilo manuelino dá uma nota particular à praça, onde se vê um pelourinho também do séc. XVI, e a Igreja da Misericórdia, uma obra de referência do período do Renascimento. Seguindo depois pela Rua do Touro, encontra-se o Museu Jorge Vieira, em referência ao importante escultor português do séc. XX, cuja obra é conhecida pelas figuras em terracota.

Mais à frente, um outro símbolo da cidade, o Convento de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, onde está instalado o Museu Regional de Beja. É possível descobrir lá a famosa história de Mariana Alcoforado, uma soror que aí viveu, autora das Cartas Portuguesas, em que declarava o seu amor proibido por um cavaleiro francês. O interior surpreende, com frescos nos tetos e nas paredes, e um sem-número de azulejos aplicados desde o séc. XV, fazendo de uma visita uma autêntica aula de azulejaria. E com certeza foi lá onde, há séculos, se criaram alguns dos doces conventuais da região, famosos em todo o Portugal, à base de ovos e açúcar.

Mesmo ao lado, o Teatro Municipal Pax Julia, inaugurado em 1928. Depois de encerrado em 1990, em 2005 abriu renovado, e hoje é um espaço cultural com uma programação diversa e audiência cativa, de espetáculos musicais e variedades, teatro e cinema de autor.

Na descida para as portas de Mértola, uma das saídas das muralhas da cidade, fica o Convento de São Francisco, hoje em dia uma Pousada. Abaixo no mesmo sentido, a Biblioteca José Saramago, edifício municipal dedicado ao Nobel português da literatura. Frente a essa, a Casa da Cultura, onde decorrem exposições e cujo estacionamento é conhecido por acolher mercados de antiguidades e festivais de música pontuais.

Seguindo pela Rua D. Afonso Henriques, à esquerda, o antigo Mercado Municipal; à direita, o Seminário Diocesano de Nossa Senhora de Fátima, o qual ainda é bem frequentado por jovens que pretendam iniciar uma vida religiosa. Mais à frente, a entrada traseira do Jardim Gago Coutinho e Sacadura Cabral, o pulmão da cidade, onde é possível fazer uma caminhada tranquila, admirar aves de rapina e vegetação frondosa, assim como ir num passeio de lago pelo meio dos cisnes. É também um ponto de encontro e convívio para a população de mais idade, com espetáculos esporádicos no coreto e jogos de cartas entre os locais.

Fora do centro histórico, há pontos de interesse espalhados numa capital de distrito que muito se expandiu a partir da segunda metade do século XX: a meio da Rua Tenente-Coronel Salgueiro Maia, o Parque de Feiras e Exposições de Beja, que é palco para inúmeros grandes eventos da cidade, desde festas a bailes de finalistas, passando por grandes concertos e pela feira anual de agricultura Ovibeja, que atrai as atenções todo o país todos os anos no final de Abril; na zona ocidental da cidade, a zona das Universidades, polvilhada por festejos e bares académicos muito ativos durante o ano letivo. Nesse extremo da cidade, a mais recente pérola de Beja, o Parque da Cidade, inaugurado em 2004; uma vista de linhas modernas e de água em movimento, promove o bem-estar e o desporto, usufruindo de uma horta pública e de entradas no circuito de jogging da grande Mata de Beja.

A visit to Beja in a calm Alentejo environment, discovering achievements and hidden loves.

In Beja, arrive and head to the Castle Keep, with a place in the country's history, where great battles took place to defend Portugal's borders. 40 meters high and entirely built in marble, it is Beja's flagship monument. The view from the top is unprecedented, an expansive way to admire the city and the surrounding Alentejo landscape.

Nearby, the Church of Santiago, the Cathedral and the Church of Santo Amaro where the Visigothic Center of the Regional Museum is located. Following Rua D. Manuel I, and after passing in front of a Professional School operating in what was a former hospital, you will find the heart of the city, Praça da República.

Around it, the Manueline-style architecture gives a particular note to the square, where you can see a pillory also from the 17th century. XVI, and the Church of Misericórdia, a reference work from the Renaissance period. Then following Rua do Touro, you will find the Jorge Vieira Museum, named after the important Portuguese sculptor of the 19th century. XX, whose work is known for its terracotta figures.

Further ahead, another symbol of the city, the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, where the Beja Regional Museum is located. It is possible to discover there the famous story of Mariana Alcoforado, a soror who lived there, author of the Portuguese Letters, in which she declared her forbidden love for a French knight. The interior is surprising, with frescoes on the ceilings and walls, and countless tiles applied since the 18th century. XV, making a visit an authentic tile-making class. And it was certainly there where, centuries ago, some of the region's convent sweets, famous throughout Portugal, were created, based on eggs and sugar.

Right next door, the Municipal Theater Pax Julia, opened in 1928. After closing in 1990, it opened renovated in 2005, and today it is a cultural space with a diverse program and captive audience, with musical and variety shows, theater and author cinema .

On the way down to the gates of Mértola, one of the exits from the city walls, is the Convento de São Francisco, nowadays a Inn. Below in the same direction, the José Saramago Library, a municipal building dedicated to the Portuguese Nobel Prize winner for literature. Opposite this, the Casa da Cultura, where exhibitions take place and whose parking lot is known for hosting antique markets and occasional music festivals.

Following Rua D. Afonso Henriques, on the left, the old Municipal Market; on the right, the Diocesan Seminary of Nossa Senhora de Fátima, which is still well attended by young people who want to start a religious life. Further ahead, the rear entrance to Jardim Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral, the lungs of the city, where it is possible to take a peaceful walk, admire birds of prey and leafy vegetation, as well as go on a lake walk among the swans. It is also a meeting and socializing point for the older population, with sporadic shows on the bandstand and card games between locals.

Outside the historic center, there are points of interest spread across a district capital that has expanded greatly since the second half of the 20th century: in the middle of Rua Tenente-Coronel Salgueiro Maia, the Beja Fair and Exhibition Park, which is the stage for numerous major events in the city, from parties to proms, major concerts and the annual Ovibeja agricultural fair, which attracts attention across the country every year at the end of April; in the western part of the city, the Universities area, full of parties and academic bars that are very active during the academic year. At this end of the city, Beja's most recent pearl, Parque da Cidade, opened in 2004; a view of modern lines and moving water, promotes well-being and sport, enjoying a public vegetable garden and entrances to the jogging circuit of the great Mata de Beja.
