Elvas é uma das cidades mais bonitas de Portugal e, juntamente com Évora, destaca-se na região alentejana e a poucos quilómetros da fronteira com Espanha. Venha comigo conhecer esta que é a maior cidade fortificada da Europa e reconhecida pela UNESCO como Património da Humanidade.

Para ficar a saber mais acerca da história desta cidade, terá que recuar vários séculos até ao tempo dos celtas considerados uns dos primeiros povoadores desta zona.

Posteriormente, chegaram à Península Ibérica os romanos e, apesar de alguma resistência, estabeleceram-se nesta região por volta de 155 A.C.

Estes últimos terão sido os primeiros a deixar vestígios significativos da sua presença, numa altura em que a povoação que viria a ser Elvas começava a desempenhar um papel importante na patrulha das rotas comerciais e dos transeuntes.

Com o declínio do Império Romano, cerca de seis séculos mais tarde, surgiram nesta região os visigodos, mas estes não ficariam nestas terras mais do que 200 anos.

A partir do século VIII estabelecem-se nesta região os mouros, povo que viria a reconhecer por definitivo a importância estratégica desta povoação dando origem ao seu crescimento demográfico.

De facto, foi durante a ocupação muçulmana que surgiram as primeiras fortificações uma no século IX e outra no século XII, devido ao crescimento da povoação em tamanho e em número de habitantes.

Finalmente, a partir do século XIII, Elvas tornou-se parte integrante do reino português e adquiriu o seu estatuto de cidade-fortaleza por altura da Guerra da Restauração Portuguesa, de 1640 a 1668.

Este estatuto devia-se ao facto de ser por aqui o caminho mais próximo para alcançar a capital portuguesa, Lisboa, e, por isso, havia a necessidade de o proteger. Desta forma, e ao longo dos séculos, Elvas foi ganhando protagonismo e tornando-se numa das cidades mais importantes de Portugal.

Elvas is one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal and, together with Évora, stands out in the Alentejo region and just a few kilometers from the border with Spain. Come with me and discover this which is the largest fortified city in Europe and recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

To learn more about the history of this city, you will have to go back several centuries to the time of the Celts considered one of the first settlers of this area.

Later, the Romans arrived in the Iberian Peninsula and, despite some resistance, settled in this region around 155 BC.

The latter were probably the first to leave significant traces of their presence, at a time when the town that would become Elvas began to play an important role in patrolling commercial routes and passers-by.

With the decline of the Roman Empire, around six centuries later, the Visigoths appeared in this region, but they would not stay in these lands for more than 200 years.

From the 8th century onwards, the Moors settled in this region, a people who would definitively recognize the strategic importance of this town, giving rise to its demographic growth.

In fact, it was during the Muslim occupation that the first fortifications appeared one in the 9th century and another in the 12th century, due to the population's growth in size and number of inhabitants.

Finally, from the 13th century onwards, Elvas became an integral part of the Portuguese kingdom and acquired its status as a fortress city during the Portuguese Restoration War, from 1640 to 1668.

This status was due to the fact that this was the closest route to reach the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, and therefore there was a need to protect it. In this way, and over the centuries, Elvas gained prominence and became one of the most important cities in Portugal.
