Nos finais do século XIX muitos banhistas hospedavam-se nas casas e quintas que rodeavam a costa, disfrutando da grande atracão que era a Praia de Santa Catarina ou Praia da Rocha.
Começou como qualquer outro poiso marítimo: um pedaço costeiro semeado de pequenas casas de agricultores e pescadores. Só no início do século XX é que uma certa burguesia e aristocracia sulista a povoou com vista ao recreio balnear, com quintas e chalés com acesso facilitado à praia.
A fama inflacionou, e mais tarde, aqui se fez um hotel, que cedo se percebeu ser demasiado pequeno para cobrir a procura, amplia-se esse e constrói-se mais um, depois mais outro, entretanto um casino. Chegaram depois os apartamentos e o comércio (muitos restaurantes) a apoiar o crescimento.
