Desde o início da nação que a Golegã tem estado muito ligada ao tratamento e criação dos cavalos, sendo que inicialmente o seu nome era Vila Galega, por aí existir uma albergaria explorada por uma mulher galega onde as montadas eram trocadas e tratadas.
A 25 de Abril de 1520, D. Manuel I concede foral à pequena aldeia e em 1534 foi elevada a vila por D. João III.
Com o crescimento da população e o acréscimo do comércio de cavalos, foi criada em 1571 a Feira do Cavalo a fim de promover a criação do cavalo Lusitano e o comércio do mesmo.

Em 1871, o abastado agricultor Carlos Relvas mandou edificar o 'Chalet', cujo objetivo era ser um laboratório e estúdio de fotografia.
O concelho da Golegã, mais particularmente a freguesia da Azinhaga, ficou também conhecida como o berço do ilustre escritor e prémio Nobel da Literatura, José Saramago.

With the growth of the population and the increase of the horse trade, the Horse Fair was created in 1571 in order to promote the creation of the Lusitano horse and the trade of the same.

In 1871, the wealthy farmer Carlos Relvas had the 'Chalet' built, whose goal was to be a laboratory and photography studio.
The municipality of Golegã, more particularly the parish of Azinhaga, was also known as the birthplace of the illustrious writer and Nobel Prize winner of Literature, José Saramago.
